Facility Operations/Event Staff: Grounds Crew/Turf Management
Ground Internship - Charlotte Motor Speedway (Concord, NC)

Charlotte Motor Speedway, zMax Dragway, and The Dirt Track at Charlotte is seeking to fill the position of a Groundskeeper Intern. The Groundskeeper Intern is responsible for assisting in repairing and maintaining all grounds, turf, and its surrounding components as a first-class event facility by performing daily turf, dirt, parking lot maintenance, and water management; event preparation as well as short and long-term maintenance planning. This position works under management in maintaining a race surface turf that meets the guidelines and complies with and/or exceeds the high quality and safety standards.

Primary Duties:

  • Contribute to the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and wetlands on the facility grounds.
  • Assist the staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement, spraying, pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs, the preparation of soil plant beds for aesthetically pleasing arrangements, and tending to high stress areas.
  • Provides detailed annual plan for the various property levels and the designated landscaping areas. Includes rotational design to provide facility with fresh, eye-catching, interesting, and pleasant atmosphere.
  • Collaborate with Management to oversee the aggressive water usage tracking plan and irrigation systems. Provide monthly reporting on retaining ponds, wells, and other water source usage.
  • Participates in technical, operational, and safety training with employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA, state, and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
  • Partake in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment.
  • Engage in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the speedways grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Schedules maintenance practices around track rentals and events to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to guests.
  • Works with staff to coordinates snow removal and winter maintenance activities when necessary.

 

 

Knowledge & Skills Required:

  • Knowledge of maintenance of sports fields and large facility grounds keeping.
  • Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in landscape construction and maintenance work.  
  • Knowledge of safe use, mixing, and application of chemicals and commercial products.
  • Knowledge of scheduling around the event business.
  • Ability to anticipate personnel, equipment, and material requirements related to facility grounds maintenance and repair assignments.
  • Knowledge of laying out irrigation patterns, drainage pattern and landscape construction.

·         Intern must be able to work a minimum of 35 hours per week plus all events held during the semester.

  • Internship will meet all requirements for college credit with proper paperwork and professor approval

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old with clean driving record
  • Advanced computer skills required for financial reporting and control of operations.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • In the process of Pesticide Application License

Grounds Seasonal Crew Member - Charlotte Motor Speedway (Concord, NC)

Grounds Seasonal Crew Member

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Grounds Lead Person, performs a variety of duties in the Grounds and Landscaping Department of Charlotte Motor Speedway Operations; and performs related duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

o    Assists the Grounds department with servicing the facility with grounds maintenance, general landscape duties, and seasonal maintenance projects

o    Responsible for mowing, weed eating, tree and bush trimming, and leaf blowing of the entire speedway property

o    Assists with special grounds projects including sod installation, planting/removing shrubbery, and seeding/fertilizing  

o    Work events and perform various duties as needed to make event successful including trash removal, equipment setup, etc..

o    May operate earth moving equipment under the supervision of Grounds Manager 

o    Assist with the setup and teardown of Speedway Christmas

o    Assists other departments when needed

o    Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

o    Knowledge of grounds maintenance for a large scale multi-function event complex

o    Experience variety of grounds equipment including mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers  etc.

o    Skill in using hand and power tools.

o    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with CMS staff and the customers.

o    Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves moderate to heavy work in all types of weather. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. This position is a seasonal position that works up to 30 hours a week from April 1 until November 30th. Some 2nd and 3rd shifts are required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (1) year of landscaping experience in a large event facility, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid driver’s license and a clear driving record are required. Must be at least 18 years of age

Physical Demands

·         Ability to work in a variety of physical positions, including standing, walking, kneeling, bending, or sitting for extended periods of time.  This includes working in various surfaces such as turf, hillsides, campgrounds, asphalt, tree cover, etc.

·         Ability and preparedness to work year-round in various weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, rain, ice, etc.

·         Ability to lift 50 lbs. of weight frequently throughout the work day.

Knowledge & Skills Required:

  • Knowledge of management and maintenance of sports fields and large facility grounds keeping.
  • Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in landscape construction and maintenance work.
  • Skill in supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years’ experience as a groundskeeper/grounds crew, landscaping crew lead, sports turf assistant, or similar turf and landscaping experience directly related to the position.
  • Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Pesticide Application License or the ability to obtain in a set time period.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-year Degree or Certificate in Turf Management (or related field, such as agronomy, horticulture, landscape management, plant science, soil science).

Tour Guides need to be high energy individuals that can engage the race fan during all Charlotte Motor Speedway’s daily tours and event time tours. Guides need to have a flexible work schedule and possess exceptional customer service and communication skills.

Job Responsibilities:
• Greet and provide top-notch customer service to all visitors of Charlotte Motor Speedway by effectively answering questions, providing directions, and selling tours.
• Provide safe tours to the general public and groups
               o  Feel the Thrill Tour
               o Over the Wall Tour
               o STEM Education Tours
               o Trackside Tram Tours during race week
               o NASCAR Hall of Fame Tours
               o Race Shop Tours
• Inform the Tour Services Manager when maintenance and care is needed on the tour vans.
• Solicit group tours and conventions to purchase daily tours
• Utilize Archtic ticket system by selling daily tours through it, adding customer accounts and doing end of the day ticket reports.
• Responsible for keeping scripts up-to-date and needs to be knowledgeable of the ticket packages available to fans.
• Responsible for fueling vans prior to usage and cleanliness of vehicles
• Enjoy working with fans of all ages
• Other duties as assigned
 

Requirements:

• Must be at least 21 years old 
• Experience with Microsoft Office products, Outlook and PCs is required
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills
• Flexible and able to adjust to changing conditions and circumstances
